Freeware Sega Ringedge2 Multigame
I figured I would start my Freeware Ringedge2 Multigame thread here since the official thread over on arcade-projects was removed. You might have seen this multigame shared on other parts of the internet or even for sale in some places.
if you have any questions, or want to talk about it. Lets do so here.
I started working on this multi last year in my free time. I got it to a point were its stable and works as expected. Though its not as feature rich as the my Freeware X2 multi, this will mature in time.
Current Features and Benefits
- Works with any Ringedge2 system ( no matter what the original game was. )
- No need for card readers
- No need for keychip.
- Only need a single drive
- Will work with off the shelf retail HDD/SSD
- Autoboot ( the system can autoboot directly into a game bypassing the menu. )
- Supports 480p/720p
- Menu themes
- Game videos

- Adding games:
< Coming soon >
- Drive locking instructions:
WARNING!!! - Using hdparm can be very dangerous if you dont know what you're doing!
NOTE: Not all USB to SATA adapters will support locking / unlocking drives. Some will let you lock drives and then not detect a locked drive for you to unlock it.
Things you will need:
1.) A supported SSD from above
2.) Linux PC or a live Linux bootable CD/USB ( I recommend Linux Mint )
3.) USB to SATA adapter ( or a way to connect the sata drive to the Linux PC ).
4.) Beer
Steps:
0.) Write the multi image to your SSD using something like dd ( Linux ) or 'HDD Raw Copy Tool' ( Windows ).
1.) Add your games < Instructions coming soon! >
2.) Connect your freshly imaged SSD to your Linux PC.
3.) Find the block device associated with your SSD. You can use either the 'dmesg' or 'lsblk' command to do this.
NOTE: In this example I will be using a PNY CS900 120GB SSD.
Here is what the last few lines from the 'dmesg' output looks like
Here is what the output from 'lsblk' looks like
In my case, the block device associated with my drive is 'sdc'
4.) Now that we know our block device, its time to lock the drive. ( This is where things can get dangerous. If you lock the wrong drive you're going to have a bad day. )
To lock your drive run: sudo hdparm --user-master u --security-mode m --security-set-pass hex:<ATA Key> /dev/sdX
In the command above, you will replace '<ATA Key>' with the ATA Key for your supported drive. You will also replace '/dev/sdX' with the block device associated with your drive, that you discovered in Step #3.
So in my example, the complete command I run to lock MY drive looks like this:
sudo hdparm --user-master u --security-mode m --security-set-pass hex:0242826a1253ca5bf242ea78d263524ab213d22a0a460be66a467f865c8a5a86 /dev/sdc
If you did everything correctly, your output should like similar to the example above.
5.) Safely eject your SSD and enjoy!
NOTE: When connecting your multi SSD to your RE2. Make sure you connect it up using the same connections the original 32GB SSD used. The RE2 expects the OS drive to be on a specific SATA port.
- Drive unlocking instructions:
NOTE: Not all USB to SATA adapters will support locking / unlocking drives. Some will let you lock drives and then not detect a locked drive for you to unlock it.
Things you will need:
1.) A previously locked SSD
2.) Linux PC or a live Linux bootable CD/USB ( I recommend Linux Mint )
3.) USB to SATA adapter ( or a way to connect the sata drive to the Linux PC ).
4.) Beer
Steps:
1.) Connect your locked SSD to your Linux PC.
2.) Find the block device associated with your SSD.
3.) Now that we know our block device, its time to unlock the drive.
To unlock your drive run: sudo hdparm --user-master u --security-disable hex:<ATA Key> /dev/sdX
In the command above, you will replace '<ATA Key>' with the ATA Key for your supported drive. You will also replace '/dev/sdX' with the block device associated with your drive, that you discovered in Step #2.
So in my example, the complete command I run to unlock MY drive looks like this:
sudo hdparm --user-master u --security-disable hex:0242826a1253ca5bf242ea78d263524ab213d22a0a460be66a467f865c8a5a86 /dev/sdc
If you did everything correctly, your output should like similar to the example above.
4.) Now disconnect your SSD and remove the power. The next time you connect the drive up to your PC, it will be unlocked.
